ETL Engineer (Data Engineering)

Location: Kampala, Uganda, with national and regional travel as required. Current work authorization in Uganda is required; visa sponsorship is not available.

What you will do

• Develop, test, deploy, and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines for approved source systems and National Data Warehouse products.
• Implement data transformations, validation rules, scheduling, exception handling, reconciliation, and automated alerting.
• Modernize fragile manual, file-based, and direct-database processes into approved and monitored data-exchange patterns.
• Maintain source-to-target mappings, data dictionaries, pipeline documentation, logs, runbooks, and version-controlled code.
• Investigate pipeline failures, data discrepancies, delayed loads, and quality exceptions with source-system owners.
• Support data mart refreshes, dashboard and reporting extracts, peer reviews, release procedures, testing, and operational handover to Ministry of Health and DHI counterparts.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data engineering, information systems, statistics, or a related field.
• At least 3 years of experience developing ETL/ELT pipelines, SQL scripts, and data transformations.
• Experience with relational databases, Python or another scripting language, version control, and scheduling or orchestration tools.
• Strong attention to detail, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
• Professional fluency in English.
• Current authorization to work in Uganda is required.

Nice to have

• Experience with DHIS2, health data systems, interoperability standards, or data quality processes.
