TL;DR
Archaeological Field Technician (Archaeology): Conducting archaeological surveys, test excavations, site excavations, and Stage 4 mitigations across southern Ontario with an accent on artifact identification, documentation, and collaboration with Indigenous field representatives. Focus on excavating and screening soil, working across rugged terrain and changing weather conditions, and supporting archaeological field teams on multi-day assignments.
Location: St. Catharines, Canada; onsite work across southern Ontario
Projected compensation: $26.00/hour CAD

What you will do
- Participate in Stage 2 surveys, Stage 3 test excavations, and Stage 4 archaeological mitigations.
- Identify, collect, process, and interpret artifacts.
- Prepare field notes, sketches, photographs, and digital records.
- Excavate and screen soil while carrying and moving equipment and materials.
- Support Field Supervisors and Project Managers with daily field activities.
- Collaborate respectfully with Indigenous field representatives and follow health and safety procedures.
Requirements
- At least 4 years of experience or equivalent experience with physically demanding outdoor work.
- Ability to lift 30–50 lb, carry 20+ lb, perform repetitive tasks, and walk or hike up to 10 km per day.
- Willingness to work long field days in hot, cold, wet, and rugged conditions.
- Ability to travel daily to variable project locations across southern Ontario and report to designated meeting points.
- Ability to stay overnight for consecutive days; per diem and accommodation are provided.
- Strong teamwork, reliability, punctuality, communication skills, and a professional attitude. A valid Ontario G driver’s licence or reliable transportation is an asset.
Nice to have
- Completion of an archaeological field school.
- Undergraduate degree or ongoing studies in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field.
- Previous Ontario archaeological consulting experience covering Stages 2–4.
- Knowledge of Ontario artifact types.
- Ontario Archaeological Research License.
