Lead Electrical Design Engineer – Control & Protection Cabinet Design

Location: Pullman, Washington, United States; onsite at the SEL corporate office

Salary: $115,000–$170,000 per year for Lead Engineer roles; Development Lead Engineer range is $136,000–$201,000 per year.

What you will do

• Design control and protection cabinets, including schematics, panel layouts, wiring, grounding, and labeling.
• Select transformers, contactors, relays, terminal blocks, power supplies, and circuit protection devices.
• Maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and bills of materials.
• Apply creepage and clearance requirements and ensure compliance with applicable electrical standards and codes.
• Collaborate with component design, manufacturing, test, and qualification teams during design reviews and iterations.
• Support prototype builds, troubleshooting, qualification testing, production transition, regulatory reviews, audits, and certifications.

Requirements

• U.S. citizenship is required.
• B.S. in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Typically 5+ years of experience designing electrical cabinets or control panels.
• Knowledge of electrical component selection for industrial or power applications.
• Understanding of wiring practices, grounding, cable management, creepage, and clearance requirements.
• Working knowledge of electrical safety and compliance standards, with the ability to document designs and communicate across functions.

Nice to have

• Experience with power systems, protection, automation, or industrial controls cabinet design.
• Knowledge of thermal management, EMC/EMI, and NEMA/IP environmental ratings.
• Experience with AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, SolidWorks Electrical, or similar electrical CAD tools.
• Familiarity with manufacturing and panel shop processes or MIL Standards.
