Principal Data Engineer

Location: Remote within the United States, with occasional travel to Staples, Minnesota, three to four times per year for meetings, professional development, or team activities.

Salary: $114,320–$142,900 annual salary range; compensation may exceed the midpoint based on experience.

What you will do

• Lead the design, development, enhancement, and maintenance of data solutions, databases, integrations, reports, and analytics.
• Plan data architecture and make technical decisions for complex, large-scale systems.
• Design data structures, algorithms, constraints, dependencies, and integration solutions, and review technical designs.
• Optimize systems for scalability, performance, security, and deliverability.
• Establish testing and quality-control practices to protect data integrity and support regulatory compliance.
• Mentor data engineers, resolve complex issues, and support releases and critical data systems, including occasional work outside traditional hours.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field plus at least seven years of relevant experience, or equivalent education and experience totaling 11 years.
• At least five years of experience with SQL Server, including database design, complex SQL, stored procedures, indexing, security, backups, and administration.
• At least five years of experience designing, developing, and maintaining ETL solutions such as SSIS or Azure Data Factory.
• At least four years of experience with some combination of .NET, C#, REST, OAuth, and ODBC.
• At least three years of experience with some combination of Azure, Power BI, SSRS, Azure DevOps, Jira, and Git.
• Strong business process and operational knowledge, including areas such as customer service, inventory management, procurement, accounting, or education and student data.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in computer science or a related field.
• Extended experience with SQL Server, ETL solutions, .NET, C#, REST, OAuth, ODBC, Azure, Power BI, SSRS, Azure DevOps, Jira, or Git.
• Experience with education or student data.
