Location: Charlotte, North Carolina, United States
Salary: $115,300–$170,400 per year for the Lead Integration & Automation Engineer level. A different range may apply for other experience levels.

What you will do
- Lead research, specification, design, and verification of IEC 61850 features, data models, architectures, and engineering workflows across hardware and software products.
- Develop system-level requirements, functional specifications, design documentation, and product direction for current and future solutions.
- Architect and evaluate GOOSE, sampled values, MMS, digital substation, automation, network redundancy, and time-synchronization solutions.
- Conduct feasibility studies, simulations, laboratory testing, technology evaluations, and interoperability or conformance assessments.
- Collaborate with firmware, hardware, software, test, cybersecurity, power-systems, and product teams on system design and product enhancements.
- Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership during product development, architecture reviews, and critical design decisions.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
- At least 6 years of experience in power-system protection, automation, or substation communications engineering.
- Demonstrated expertise in IEC 61850, including data modeling, SCL workflows, GOOSE, MMS, sampled values, and system architectures.
- Knowledge of IEC 60870-5-103/101/104, Modbus, DNP3, PRP, IEEE 1588 PTP, SEL protocols, SCADA systems, and substation integration patterns.
- Experience designing or implementing protection, automation, or SCADA systems in utility or industrial environments.
- Satisfactory background check and negative drug test results are required.
Nice to have
- Master’s or Ph.D. in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Experience with SEL products, tools, and engineering workflows or with deploying digital substations.
- Experience with SCL, SSD, IID, ICD, CID, and SCT engineering artifacts and workflows.
- Hands-on Wireshark experience for MMS, GOOSE, and sampled-values analysis, plus familiarity with VLANs, QoS, network simulation, and impairment testing.
- Familiarity with cybersecurity requirements for substation automation systems.
