Fire Marshal

Location: Onsite at the MSU Bozeman campus in Bozeman, Montana, United States

Salary: Minimum $82,000 annually, commensurate with experience, education, and qualifications.

What you will do

• Act independently as the Authority Having Jurisdiction for fire code application and enforcement across the Bozeman campus.
• Schedule, coordinate, supervise, and direct testing and maintenance of alarms, smoke detection, suppression systems, water mains, hydrants, and related components.
• Conduct building fire code inspections and coordinate with building supervisors, the Bozeman Fire Department, contractors, and code officials.
• Review fire codes and architectural plans for capital projects and major renovations.
• Coordinate fire drills, evacuation plans, special-event fire safety reviews, and post-fire investigations.
• Manage the fire extinguisher program and provide fire and life safety training, education, and outreach.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or associate degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, or a related field plus two years of full-time fire safety and emergency services experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Current NFPA or ICC fire inspection certification is required; credentials must be obtained during the probationary period if needed.
• Five or more years of fire and life safety experience is required for the equivalent-experience pathway.
• Working knowledge of ICC and NFPA fire codes, fire protection systems, inspection criteria, municipal fire systems, and fire drills.
• Ability to read architectural plans and evaluate alarms, suppression systems, emergency lighting, occupancy, egress, and other life safety requirements.
• Must possess or be eligible to obtain a valid Montana driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record; background check completion is required.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of the hirify.global campus or a similar campus, including laboratory and facilities operations.
• Experience working with city and state fire departments, fire marshals, and code officials.
• Clear communication, active listening, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
