Location: Galveston, Texas, United States. The role requires sailing during designated underway periods, training cruises, and shipyard or other periods when the vessel is away from Galveston.

Texas A&M University at Galveston is the ocean campus of Texas A&M University, operating the Texas A&M Maritime Academy.

What you will do

  • Stand wheel, anchor, gangway, and roving watches while maintaining alertness and following navigational steering orders.
  • Perform deck maintenance, repairs, sanitation, and upkeep across the ship’s hull, decks, superstructure, cargo gear, boats, and safety equipment.
  • Carry out chipping, scraping, soundings, priming, painting, and cleaning activities.
  • Learn and use emergency, lifesaving, damage-control, and safety equipment.
  • Launch lifesaving equipment, conduct ship security inspections, and perform other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Previous experience aboard ocean or inland vessels.
  • Active AB Special license or higher.
  • USCG-approved Adult CPR, Basic First Aid completed within the last 12 months, current CPR, TWIC, Qualified Lifeboatman, and STCW with RFPNW endorsement.
  • Current USCG medical certification and passport.
  • Ability to climb ladders, move through hatches and confined spaces, wear personal protective equipment, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Must pass a USCG/DOT drug test before employment and participate in random drug and alcohol testing.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of maintaining training and maintenance programs for deck cadets.
  • Ability to lift moderately heavy objects and exert moderate force.
