Network Systems Research Engineer (Networking)

Location: Bryan, Texas, United States; occasional travel to other campuses, vendors, and outdoor facilities is required.

What you will do

• Conduct basic and applied research on networks and networked applications, evaluating equipment, protocols, designs, and tools.
• Design and document new or upgraded research networks, including security measures, configuration backup, and operational standards.
• Configure, install, integrate, and test research networks and emerging networking technologies.
• Provide Tier I–III support, diagnose complex hardware and software issues, and develop disaster recovery and protection methods.
• Perform network security assessments and audits for compliance with government standards.
• Prepare project updates, technical reports, presentations, and deliverables while providing technical leadership to student teams.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Six, eight, or nine years of network or wireless networking experience, depending on the selected level.
• Knowledge of LANs, Layer 2 switching, WiFi, VLANs, spanning tree, IP subnetting, Layer 3 routing, DHCP, NTP, and DNS.
• Restricted to U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents; ability to obtain a U.S. passport and Secret-level U.S. security clearance is required.
• Ability to install and remove servers, switches, radios, and antennas, climb ladders, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions when required.
• Ability to work occasionally outside normal office hours and collaborate effectively with researchers, administrators, contractors, vendors, and students.

Nice to have

• Certifications in networking, network security, Juniper, Cisco, routing, or security.
• Experience with SNMP, logging, firewalls, and NAT/PAT.
