Power Systems Protection Engineer

Location: Houston, Texas, United States. The role requires domestic and international travel of at least 25% of the time, depending on the area of focus.

Salary: $110,000–$175,000 per year.

What you will do

• Design, develop, and implement protection and control schemes for power systems.
• Develop protective relay settings for industrial facilities, generation plants, substations, and transmission and distribution systems.
• Collaborate with project managers, engineers, technicians, customers, and protection experts to assess requirements and implement protection strategies.
• Perform system testing and commissioning to validate protection scheme functionality and performance.
• Prepare functional design specifications, detailed design documents, reports, checklists, test reports, and project deliverables.
• Train and assist customers with the design, configuration, validation, installation, commissioning, and operation of automation and protection systems.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a relevant discipline.
• 3+ years of relevant experience with electric power systems, industry practices, and protection design practices and philosophies.
• Strong knowledge of electric power system protection and control, system design, studies, information and communication technology, and protective relay applications.
• Experience with power system studies using ETAP, SKM, RTDS, or similar tools.
• Familiarity with IEEE, IEC, and NERC/FERC regulations.
• Willingness to travel domestically and internationally at least 25% of the time.

Nice to have

• Professional Engineer license or equivalent certification.
• Industrial plant, consulting engineering, or system integrator experience.
• Project engineering experience.
• Programming, testing, and commissioning experience with protective relays.
• Experience with AC/DC schematics, single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, and SEL AcSELerator QuickSet configuration files.
