East Texas A&M University operates the Lyon Center for Gamebird Research, a research center focused on sustainable gamebird populations, professional training, and conservation of gamebird hunting heritage.

What you will do

  • Manage daily gamebird production, quality control, biosecurity, sanitation, equipment, maintenance, and procurement.
  • Develop and execute standard operating procedures for gamebird production.
  • Monitor eggs, birds, and facilities while meeting production, research, safety, and animal-use requirements.
  • Maintain accurate bird counts within 2% and reduce mortalities to below 10%.
  • Coordinate customer interactions and bird sales, and collaborate with faculty and staff to integrate research into production.
  • Train, manage, and evaluate production facility staff while contributing to strategic planning and center administration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in the poultry or gamebird industry, including at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Knowledge and experience with biosecurity practices, workplace safety, production metrics, budgeting, and compliance.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organization, problem-solving, computer, and community engagement skills.
  • Ability to manage staff and facilities, adapt to seasonal schedules, work outdoors, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Availability for occasional weekends or work outside normal hours, with potential exposure to dust, animal dander, heat, humidity, animal byproducts, precipitation, and mud.

Nice to have

  • Experience producing or managing a quail production facility.
  • Experience operating farm machinery.
  • Experience in higher education, research, conservation, or nonprofit organizations.
  • Knowledge of gamebird research and conservation, and an interest in hunting and the outdoors.
