Senior Applied AI Engineer (AI)

Location: North Carolina, United States

Base pay for other U.S. cities and states: $152,900–$224,235 per year. The role may also include variable compensation and/or equity.

What you will do

• Lead applied AI research from problem framing and experiment design through evidence-based decisions.
• Build agentic systems that improve through evaluation loops and recover from failures.
• Extend evaluation platforms with task suites, regression checks, and quality, cost, and speed measurements.
• Work with third-party model APIs, open-weight models, GPU infrastructure, fine-tuning, and efficient serving.
• Build prototypes, playgrounds, and APIs, then advise deployment teams on AI integration and production monitoring.
• Mentor engineers and help stakeholders turn real operational problems into valuable research questions.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience building software and ML systems, including recent hands-on LLM systems beyond the prototype stage.
• Experience building production-oriented agents and handling failures in long-running agent workflows.
• Experience with third-party model APIs, open-weight models, and GPU-based infrastructure.
• Experience with Kubernetes inference platforms, Flyte, LiteLLM, Langfuse, and evaluation and tracing tools.
• Strong Python skills and solid machine learning fundamentals.
• Daily experience with Claude Code, Cursor, or similar coding agents while maintaining correctness and test quality.

• Fine-tuning or serving open-weight models.
• Automated prompt and pipeline optimization.
• Multi-GPU serving, MCP, and tool protocols.
• Cybersecurity experience, including phishing or threat detection.
• Open-source contributions or research publications.
