Manager, Software Engineering - Core Services (AI)

Location: Tokyo, Japan; hybrid with 3 days per week in the hirify.global office

What you will do

• Lead and manage a team of 4–7 software engineers in Japan working on foundational platform services.
• Develop engineers’ communication, collaboration, self-management, and technical capabilities through clear expectations and constructive feedback.
• Establish engineering processes, planning discipline, accountability, and predictable delivery practices.
• Own roadmap execution while balancing technical debt, service reliability, and development velocity.
• Guide architecture and system design discussions, helping engineers evaluate tradeoffs and make sound technical decisions.
• Partner with senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders to turn company strategy into Core Services initiatives, and participate in the on-call rotation as an escalation point.

Requirements

• Native or upper-business-level Japanese and business-level English.
• 8+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years in management.
• Ability to critically review architecture and guide engineers through design tradeoffs.
• Strong understanding of APIs, backend services, and reliability engineering principles.
• Proven experience coaching and developing high-performing engineers and enabling impactful outcomes.
• Experience managing distributed teams across multiple time zones in a global organization.
