TL;DR
Heat Treatment Manufacturing Engineer (Ohio) (Automotive): Specifying, procuring, qualifying, and implementing heat-treatment and metallurgical-processing equipment for gears and transmission and axle components with an accent on equipment lifecycle ownership, process robustness, and manufacturing feasibility. Focus on supplier management, installation and commissioning, CAPEX and schedule control, PFMEA, and cross-functional delivery across powertrain plants.

Location: Dearborn, Michigan, with frequent travel to the Cincinnati, Ohio area for the full workweek. Work type: Hybrid. The role requires approximately 75% travel and candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Salary: $86,600–$144,900 or $99,100–$166,200, depending on salary grade and job scope.

What you will do

  • Specify, procure, qualify, and implement equipment and tooling for carburizing, vacuum carburizing, induction hardening, shot peening, laser welding, and automation.
  • Own equipment delivery from technical specification and supplier selection through design, runoff, shipment, installation, commissioning, and production start-up.
  • Implement qualified machines and processes in powertrain plants and drive continuous improvement in heat treatment, materials, and manufacturing methods.
  • Manage suppliers, integrators, contracts, technical documentation, project budgets, purchase orders, timing plans, and recovery actions.
  • Develop process documentation including flow charts, PFMEA, control plans, process sheets, gauging instructions, and control charts.
  • Coordinate engineering, purchasing, quality, safety, facilities, maintenance, suppliers, plants, product design, and skilled trades during project execution.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical, Materials, Mechanical, Industrial/Production Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of manufacturing engineering experience with a metallurgical background.
  • Experience with high-volume ferrous-based metallurgical processing, including heat treatment, welding, or surface treatments.
  • Experience leading equipment acquisition, installation, and commissioning projects in a manufacturing plant.
  • Experience with supplier technical procurement, RFQs, CAPEX budget control, and schedule management.
  • Knowledge of continuous and batch furnaces, controlled atmospheres, carburizing, hardenability, gear machining, and metrology; proficiency with AutoCAD, Word, Excel, Minitab, and statistical tools.

Nice to have

  • Experience with vacuum carburizing.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 or IATF 16949.
  • Automotive, powertrain, or battery manufacturing experience.
