TL;DR
Ordnance Engineer (Pyrotechnics) (Launch and Propulsion): Defining and qualifying vehicle ordnance architecture, initiation trains, and ground energetics systems with an accent on safe-and-arm devices, explosive safety, and environmental susceptibility. Focus on designing qualification campaigns, establishing explosive site and storage plans, and ensuring compliance with MIL-STD-1576, ATF, DOT, and DoD requirements.
Location: On-site in Kent, Washington, United States. Applicants must meet ITAR eligibility requirements as a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, protected individual, or person eligible to obtain the required authorizations.
Salary: $140,000–$200,000 annually
Company
Corporation builds modular satellites and space-based solar energy infrastructure for orbital power generation, high-performance computing, and secure optical data transport.
What you will do
- Define the vehicle ordnance architecture for pyro-actuated valves, mechanisms, and non-safety-critical ordnance.
- Select, specify, and qualify initiators, detonators, safe-and-arm devices, transfer lines, shaped charges, frangible joints, separation nuts, and pin pullers.
- Own initiation-chain energetics, including no-fire and all-fire current, firing margins, function timing, and inadvertent-initiation analysis.
- Develop environmental and susceptibility cases covering HERO, RF susceptibility, ESD, bonding, grounding, thermal, vibration, and shock requirements.
- Lead component, subsystem, and full-system qualification campaigns, including margin and safety-factor testing.
- Establish hazard classifications, explosive site plans, storage and magazine licensing, and compliance for purchasing, shipping, storage, and handling.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, aerospace, chemical, electrical engineering, or a similar field.
- 5–10 years of experience in ordnance, pyrotechnics, or energetic systems for launch vehicles, missiles, or spacecraft.
- Hands-on experience qualifying an ordnance device or initiation train.
- Working command of MIL-STD-1576, hazard classification, quantity-distance requirements, and applicable DoD and ATF explosives-safety rules.
- Electrical fluency in bridgewire and exploding-foil devices, firing margins, ESD, RF susceptibility, and inadvertent-initiation prevention.
- Knowledge of energetic materials, compatibility, aging, and the effects of temperature and vacuum; reusable-vehicle experience is required.
Nice to have
- Flight termination ordnance experience, including thrust termination charges, linear shaped charges, and range-approval qualification evidence.
- Experience with energetic-material formulation, compatibility and aging studies, lot acceptance, or surveillance programs.
- Experience establishing an explosives site plan, magazine, or ATF license from scratch.
- Pyroshock testing and analysis, SSCMAN/AFSPCMAN 91-710, MSPSP, Vandenberg, or Cape Canaveral experience.
- Startup or small-hardware-company experience managing parts, licenses, and procedures.
Culture & Benefits
- Work alongside flight safety and range safety leaders on a first-hire ordnance discipline.
- Equity in Corporation.
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and eligible dependents.
- 401(k), paid time off, 10 paid holidays, and paid parental leave.
- Relocation assistance where applicable, daily office lunch, and a stocked kitchen.
