Manager, Software Engineering — Applications Group (Web Applications/AI): Leading a Tokyo-based engineering team of five building backend services and frontend surfaces for audience segmentation and marketing campaign decisioning across activation channels with an accent on people leadership, full-stack capability, and AI-assisted engineering. Focus on managing sprint delivery, reviewing architecture, triaging customer escalations, and balancing technical sustainability with team health.
Location: Tokyo, Japan; attendance at the Tokyo office three days per week is required. Occasional travel to team offsites and cross-region collaboration locations in Vancouver and Mountain View may be required 2–3 times per year.

What you will do
- Lead, manage, coach, and grow a Tokyo-based Applications Group engineering team of five.
- Own team health, sprint planning, delivery commitments, capacity, and technical sustainability.
- Partner with product managers and cross-functional stakeholders to turn roadmap and customer signals into executable requirements, scope, and verification gates.
- Provide architectural reviews, evaluate trade-offs, surface risks, and escalate complex design decisions when needed.
- Triage customer escalations, address technical debt and maintenance work, and serve as an escalation point in the on-call rotation.
- Establish an async-first operating rhythm across North American and Asian teams, including written status updates, decision records, and retrospectives.
Requirements
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including prior Staff Engineer or equivalent experience.
- 3+ years of people management experience with engineers of mixed seniority, including coaching, career development, performance management, and 1:1s.
- Hands-on technical depth in building and maintaining web application systems, with the ability to review designs, assess architectural trade-offs, and contribute code.
- Fluency with AI coding agents in daily engineering work and the judgment to determine where agentic development requires human review.
- Native-level Japanese speaking and writing is required.
- Business-level English skill is required.
