Life Underwriting Consultant (Life Insurance)

Location: Minnesota, United States — remote

Base pay: $73,700–$136,800 per year

What you will do

• Evaluate life insurance applications and assess medical, financial, and lifestyle risks.
• Classify risks, identify potential fraud, and make accurate decisions within established authority limits.
• Review complex cases, recommend decisions outside authority, and collaborate with reinsurers on rated cases.
• Order appropriate underwriting requirements and manage workload against productivity and quality expectations.
• Build relationships with brokers, advisors, and internal partners while communicating decisions clearly and empathetically.
• Improve underwriting processes, contribute to special projects, and provide operational insights to management.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• At least 3 years of life underwriting experience.
• Expertise in substandard underwriting and medical and financial risk assessment.
• Strong independent decision-making, analytical judgment, and ability to document rationale clearly.
• Proficiency in financial underwriting, including business cases, and understanding of reinsurance principles.
• Strong written and verbal communication, multitasking, quality focus, and continuous-improvement mindset.

• Industry designations such as FLMI, FALU, or CLU.
