TL;DR
Trim Engineer (Automotive) (Seat Trim Design): Developing and releasing automotive seat trim covers and engineering data with an accent on 2D pattern design, foam interfaces, craftsmanship, cost, and manufacturing feasibility. Focus on solving trim and seat-system issues, supporting build events, managing engineering changes, and coordinating with customers, suppliers, and manufacturing teams.

Location: Plymouth, Michigan, United States; onsite at the Central Tech Unit in Plymouth. Travel to JIT and manufacturing plants may be required for up to 1–2 weeks at a time.

What you will do

  • Lead the development of one or more seat trim programs and provide engineering direction to staff and customer business units.
  • Design trim covers and patterns using manual methods and Optitex 2D CAD, following trim, foam interface, and design-for-assembly guidelines.
  • Release product data, drawings, engineering changes, and documentation through TPDM and PLM.
  • Build and assemble development seats, support cut-and-sew activities, and participate in complete-seat and manufacturing build events.
  • Develop data-driven solutions for trim, foam, seat-system, tooling, and process issues.
  • Coordinate with suppliers, customers, purchasing, program management, engineering, sewing, JIT manufacturing, and soft trim materials engineering teams.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of 2D pattern design and trim cover development.
  • Experience with Optitex or comparable electronic CAD patterning systems.
  • Understanding of seat and foam engineering, production build methods, and trim construction drawings.
  • Understanding of change management, ECO/CN releases, EBOM, TPDM, PLM, and required engineering documentation.
  • Ability to troubleshoot manufacturing and seat-system issues using data-driven problem solving and the Basic Engineering Process.
  • Ability to work onsite in Plymouth, Michigan, and travel to JIT or manufacturing plants when required.
