TL;DR
Commissioning Engineer (Electrical Power Systems): Planning, performing, and documenting commissioning activities for utility substation protection, control, and power circuits with an accent on electrical testing, troubleshooting, risk assessment, and project documentation. Focus on analyzing relay and wiring issues, interpreting apparatus test results, and coordinating safe energization and closeout activities for medium- and high-voltage systems.

Location: Dallas, Texas; project located in the Mid-Atlantic. Requires out-of-town travel for up to several weeks at a time, including flexible hours, weekends, overtime, holidays, and night work.

Salary: USD $115,690–$158,246 per year, depending on experience, education, skills, location, and other compensable factors.

What you will do

  • Plan, coordinate, perform, and document commissioning from pre-commissioning through construction, testing, energization, and project closeout.
  • Commission utility substation protection, control, and power circuits in line with client requirements, budgets, and schedules.
  • Review wiring diagrams, schematics, engineering documents, and equipment specifications before projects and outages.
  • Troubleshoot protection and control systems, substation equipment, wiring, settings, apparatus test results, and battery ground faults.
  • Develop testing, commissioning, energization, site risk assessment, and circuit isolation documentation.
  • Prepare, review, and approve detailed test reports, progress reports, recommendations, results, and analyses.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related engineering field.
  • 7+ years of experience in testing and commissioning services; electric utility experience is preferred.
  • Ability to read construction and manufacturer drawings, specifications, schematic diagrams, and one-line and three-line interconnection diagrams.
  • Knowledge of electrical protection systems, relay communication, AC/DC schematics, substation protection and control circuits, and medium- and high-voltage equipment.
  • Current US work eligibility and a valid USA driver's license issued by the state of residence are required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including effective client and team communication and negotiation.

Nice to have

  • Experience with Doble Protection Suite, ProTest, SEL AcSELerator, or Enoserv RTS.
  • Experience commissioning complex commercial-industrial equipment, protective relays, or power systems in field engineering roles.
