Service Trenching Operator/Groundman (Utility Construction)

Location: Northern Mississippi, United States; outdoor utility construction sites with frequent travel to job sites and possible extended hours, weekends, storm restoration, and emergency response assignments.

Salary: $18–$29 per hour, based on experience, qualifications, and overall fit.

What you will do

• Operate trenchers, mini excavators, backhoes, skid steers, and other construction equipment.
• Excavate and pothole trenches for underground electric, communication, and utility service installations.
• Assist with backfilling, compaction, grading, site restoration, cable pulling, vault setting, conduit installation, and service connections.
• Load, transport, stage, and maintain tools, materials, equipment, vehicles, and work areas.
• Support traffic control, jobsite setup, daily inspections, maintenance checks, and reporting of equipment or safety concerns.
• Assist with emergency outage response and storm restoration while following direction from foremen, equipment operators, and crew leaders.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED and a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to safely operate trenching or excavation equipment and use hand and power tools.
• Basic knowledge of underground utility construction, excavation, trench safety, grounding, and shoring requirements.
• Ability to perform strenuous outdoor construction work, lift and carry up to 75 pounds, and work in trenches, confined spaces, uneven terrain, and varying weather conditions.
• Ability to identify underground utility conflicts and hazards, read construction prints, staking sheets, and work orders, and work effectively in a crew environment.
• Must follow OSHA, company, and customer safety requirements and use required PPE.

Nice to have

• CDL Class A or Class B license.
• Electric utility, telecommunications, pipeline, or underground construction experience.
• Experience operating trenchers, backhoes, mini excavators, or skid steers.
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification, First Aid/CPR certification, or utility locating experience.
